The Clarin River starts life as two streams in Attymon and Esker before coming together to flow through the internationally famed Fields of Athenry. The river journeys through the market town, taking in the historical 13th century Norman Castle and Dominican Abbey, before leaving to meander a limestone path through the lush lands of Mulpit and Coldwood. The river takes a quick detour into the unique geological feature of Pollnacirca re-emerging to flow through Kilcornan Woods and Clarinbrige Village before reaching its final destination, the majestic Galway Bay.
From source to the sea, the Clarin River is a giver of life and a vital part of our living heritage. It is a rich resource for our farmers and food producers whilst it is also a key ingredient in providing Meroir (the taste of the sea) to our Galway oysters. In appreciation of the Clarin River and to encourage its long term sustainability, Athenry Tidy Towns and Clarinbridge Tidy Towns together with Cuan Beo, the Clarinbridge Oyster Festival, the Region of Gastronomy, the Waters and Communities Office and Galway County Council are organising a photography competition for the National School children of the Clarin River Catchment. It is hoped that viewing the river and the surrounding catchment from the eyes of our children will enrich understanding and appreciation of this very special part of County Galway.
It is intended to create a calendar of the winning entries with each school in the catchment assigned a page in the calendar. A prize will be awarded to the child with the best entry from each school. There will also be a prize for children who go to school outside the catchment area. A special additional prize of a visit to an Oyster Farm for the overall winner and their class will also be awarded. Winning entries will be displayed at the Clarinbridge Oyster Festival at its Family Day.
Entering the competition is easy. All that we ask is that participating children would take a picture of their local environment in the Clarin River Catchment Area and upload it here.
The closing date is Friday the 27th of September. We look forward to receiving your school’s entries!
